Face Value

The Dominican Republic represents a microcosm of racial and economic diversity: 70% of its people are of mixed ethnicity and nearly half of the country's wealth is owned by the top 10%. A range of income levels were photographed throughout the country, all at an upward angle with a medium format film camera. The goal of this portrait essay was to take notice of the individual, at face value, independent of his or her socioeconomic standing. All material signs of wealth, such as earrings or hats, were removed. The estimated incomes of the subjects range from $200 USD to $365,000 USD per year.
